The Cholera outbreak has hit Malawi, especially in major cities in the country. ECD centers have been affected because the centers have no sanitation equipment like hand washing facilities, feeding and cooking utensils, and proper toilets. The project will help the ECD sector in Malawi.

About the Cause

Poor health and nutrition negatively affect children’s school attendance and ability to learn. We implement school feeding programs that look for alternative ways to ensure sustainable supply of nutritious foods to school children and young people in urban and marginalized areas.

In addition, contaminated water and poor sanitation are big factors that result in the death of children worldwide. In our programs, we always include what is called WASH which means Water, Sanitation & Hygiene. This is done through the design and construction of child-friendly and gender sensitive facilities for sanitation, such as latrines and hand-washing stations. We also provide clean water supply by building water wells and raise awareness about the importance of sanitation and hygiene.

My Story

The ECD Coalition of Malawi set the campaign to help children who are attending the Early Childhood Development Centers in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu to be free from the Cholera outbreak. Most of the ECD centers in the cities don’t have facilities or equipment to prevent the outbreak because the government put little funding towards the ECD sector. The coalition together with its members will do the campaign through the production of jingles, distribution of handwashing materials, cooking, and feeding utensils, and using the Public Address System for community awareness. All the funds or materials that will be fundraised here will be directed to children in ECD centers in the mentioned cities. The Coalition is concerned because the government is not putting much effort into children in ECD centers compared to basic education. The Cholera outbreak is getting worse each and every day and there is a need to prevent children from this deadly outbreak.
