Saving Lives

14-25 learners contract HIV/AIDS through the sharing of syringes when injecting illicit drugs injected through any visible vein/muscle in the body. A number of children with injured muscles have infected wounds whilst others are amputated. Their chance to access basic education has been eroded by drugs.

About the Cause

Dubai Cares’ Walk for Education is a symbolic three kilometer walk that aims to highlight one of the challenges children face in acquiring quality education in developing countries where they have to walk an average of three kilometers every day in order to go to school. We have so far organized 10 editions of the “Walk for Education”

My Story

"Soshanguve, is a township geographically located 30km North of Pretoria, Tshwane District, Gauteng Province, South Africa. The district is one of the priority districts with a high burden of HIV disease." [National Department of Health (NDoH) National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STI's (2017-2022)] “The main burden of disease for people who inject drugs in Pretoria are: Sepsis; HCV; HIV and AIDS related complications; infective endocarditis and TB”. [South African National Drug Masterplan; 4th ed, 2019-2024, P56.] About 5 out of 10 People who inject drugs (PWID) contract; (1) HIV/AIDS and spread due sharing of syringe, whilst some suffer from (2) fatal vein/muscle injury when injecting through the same vein multiple times (3) fatal infection due to unhygienic lifestyle (4) development of diseases like blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, superficial venous thrombosis or phlebitis, Chronic venous insufficiency, Varicose and spider veins. (5) In some cases some PWID are amputated whilst (6) some die. We wish to assist learners with rehabilitative programmes, treatment of their wounds and help to return to their classes.
