SOLAR MOTORISED WATER PUMPING SYSTEMS FOR COMMUNITY WATER SUPPLY IN UGANDA

By AINAMANI SONFRED TAREMWA

Expired

A water supply project for domestic and irrigation use, here we intend to dig into the underground water and we pump it using solar water pumps to the reservoirs raised above the ground and also motorize the available borehole sources for efficiency supply in different communities in eastern and northern parts of Uganda.

About the Cause

Poor health and nutrition negatively affect children’s school attendance and ability to learn. We implement school feeding programs that look for alternative ways to ensure sustainable supply of nutritious foods to school children and young people in urban and marginalized areas.

In addition, contaminated water and poor sanitation are big factors that result in the death of children worldwide. In our programs, we always include what is called WASH which means Water, Sanitation & Hygiene. This is done through the design and construction of child-friendly and gender sensitive facilities for sanitation, such as latrines and hand-washing stations. We also provide clean water supply by building water wells and raise awareness about the importance of sanitation and hygiene.

My Story

No matter what the level, it should be considered a priority for every family to secure a reliable supply of fresh, clean drinking water. It is very unfair to take the supply of clean drinking water for granted. Using dirty water for not just washing, but also cooking and drinking is a major cause of disease and infection in most of the third world even today. Lack of access to safe water sources is a leading risk factor for infectious diseases, including cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. It also exacerbates malnutrition, and in particular, childhood stunting. In the chart we see that it ranks as a very important risk factor for death globally In the northern and eastern parts of Uganda, families have no access to reliable clean water for basic use, the available water sources are at a far distance and are used by many people. Young children, mothers and fathers are often seen with heavy water containers moving a long distance to get water, Children are forced to carry heavy cans of water on top of the long distance and the energy used to pump the borehole to get water. A lot of money to hire someone to carry for you water and also more energy is needed to get access to clean water in the northern and eastern parts of Uganda. Almost 24 million people in Uganda do not have access to clean water. On average each person in Uganda uses only about 4.7 gallons of water a day. Communities need clean water sources for drinking, cooking, farming.
